Olisa Nwakoby Of FCMB Commits Suicide In Front Of His Pastor In Lagos

FCMB Bank Manager Olisa Nwakoby Kills Himself In front Of His Pastor In Lekki Lagos Over N350Million Debt. Mr. Olisa Nwakoby, a manager at a second generation bank, First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Plc on Friday evening shot himself dead in the presence of his Priest at the Lekki area of Lagos Island, Lagos State.
The father of a 10-year- old daughter was said to have taken his own life because of an incriminating huge loan transaction he approved in his bank.

Sources close to the family told ST at the weekend that the late Olisa was the approving officer for the loan which the beneficiary is no longer servicing and the bank was on the neck of Olisa to get the money back.

His late father, Chief Patrick Oguejiofor Nwakoby was a former chairman of First Bank of Niger Plc, a successfully lawyer , politician and a highly respected community leader before his death.

Fear over his integrity and the name of his family, which could be dented if his bank commences action against him over the loan, was too much for the vibrant banker to bear prompting him to shoot himself, our source said.

Our source did not say that there was suspicion of any foul play in the death of the banker, she also could not confirm the actual amount involved in the transaction, but she simply said “it was huge.” The case is being handled by homicide detectives attached to Area J Command, Lekki/Ajah. According to a police source.

The banks, on the fateful day he killed himself, went to meet his pastor. He told the pastor to tell his wife to take good care of his children, that what he would do in next few minutes would shock everyone. He was said to have later blown his brains out.

The source continued, “It was later discovered that he took money from the bank, N350million, and the money started creating problems for him. He killed himself.”

When the Lagos State Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmus, was contacted, her two lines were switched off. Olisa hails from Nkwelle Ezunaka in Oyi Local Government of Anambra State and he attended Abia State University, where he bagged a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, in Microbiology between 1990 and 1995.

WHY I WON’T SEEK VENGEANCE AGAINST KILLERS OF ABUJA PREACHER -ADEBOYE

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has revealed why he will not seek vengeance against killers of Abuja preacher, Deaconess Eunice Olawale Elisha.

Forty-two-year old Mrs Elisha was hacked to death by hoodlums on June 9 at Gbazango-West area of Kubwa, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory while preaching early in the morning.

She was an assistant pastor at the RCCG, Divine Touch parish, Old NEPA road, Phase 4, Kubwa, before she was slashed in the neck and stabbed in the stomach by suspected religious fanatics.

Adeboye, fondly called Daddy G.O by his admirers, said contrary to calls by eminent Nigerians that he should seek vengeance against killers of the evangelist, he would not do so.

He said such move would be counterproductive just as it would be contrary to what the deceased wanted and stood for when she was martyred.

According to the revered man of God, if Dcns Elisha was actually preaching to win souls for Jesus Christ, it would be unscriptural and anti-Christ to seek to kill the same souls she sought to save.

Adeboye made the declaration on the occasion of the second day of the ongoing Ministers Conference at the Redemption Camp, Kilometer 46, Lagos – Ibadan Expressway on Friday morning ahead the 64 annual convention starting August 1.

“I’m not looking for vengeance. I won’t listen to people asking me to seek vengeance.

“I won’t pursue the case. That’ll be contrary to what she wanted.

“She wanted them saved, not killed.

“What will their killing do for me?,” the 74-year-old cleric queried.

Teaching on the topic, “Importance of Mercy,” Adeboye said since every Christian did not know when they would die, the time to truly seek God was now.

Making an example out of the slain Mrs Elisha whom he said was not aware she won’t return home alive on that fateful day, the Ifewara-born cleric warned that the end of the age was imminent, hence the prevalence of vices all over the world.

He said the murdered evangelist finished well and was, no doubt, sitting at the right hand of her Saviour for whom she paid the supreme price.

“Recently, some hoodlums went to murder my daughter in Abuja.

“She was doing her morning cry that morning as she usually did, armed with a megaphone and her Bible.

“An Imam was said to have sent some hoodlums to drive her away, but they did something else.

“She didn’t know she won’t return home that day.

“She finished well. She finished strong

“What a beautiful way to go. She’s gone to be with the Lord,” he stated glowingly.

The man of God said that his joy was predicated on the fact that another soul was waiting for him in Heaven.

“My joy is that she finished well and I have additional soul waiting to welcome me in Heaven when it is my time,” Adeboye noted.

It will be recalled that husband of the slain evangelist, Pastor Elisha had, earlier, expressed misgivings in killing whoever was caught in connection with the murder, saying he would rather they gave their lives to Jesus Christ.

Describing his wife as a martyr, he said: “I see her as a martyr, and she died for Christ. And whether the people are caught or not, they should forgive them; my prayer is that if they can accept Christ, that will be a gain to Christ.”

The slain lady evangelist, who left behind his husband, aged father, mother and seven children, was buried last Saturday in Abuja.

PDP Crisis: Ali Modu Sheriff wins as Court nullifies Port Harcourt convention

A Federal High Court siting in Abuja has nullified the national convention held by the Peoples Democratic Party on May 21 in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
It was at that convention that the National Working Committee of the party led by former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff was dissolved and a caretaker committee led by former Governor Ahmed Markarfi was constituted.
Mr. Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State, has since then been challenging his removal and has insisted that he remained the legitimate leader of Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
But ruling in a fresh case brought before his court on Thursday, Justice Okon Abang said the May 21 convention was illegal and that Mr. Makarfi’s committee was unlawfully constituted.
Justice Abang gave the ruling while determining the rightful counsel to represent the PDP in the new case.
Mr. Sheriff is asking the court to determine whether his replacement by Mr. Makarfi was lawful or an abuse of court orders.
The Lagos division of the Federal High Court had issued a court order restraining the PDP from conducting election into the offices of its national chairman, national secretary and national auditor.
The ruling by Justice Ibrahim Buba was made sequel to an application brought by Mr. Sheriff and his colleagues who occupied those positions.

Protesters In Abuja Accuse Buhari Of Nepotism, Illegal Recruitment

Nigerians drawn from various civil society groups on Wednesday protested alleged illegal recruitment and nepotism in some government agencies, questioning the anti-corruption effort of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The protesters – including popular activists, Aisha Yesufu; author, Chido Onumah; and members of Citizens of Impact, Enough is Enough, Youthup Africa – marched to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, where they submitted their protest letter for onward transfer to Mr. Buhari.
“All Nigerians must be given equal opportunity in employment,” one of their placards read.
In his address, Daniel Olatunde, convener of Citizens of Impact, said the Central Bank of Nigeria, Federal Inland Revenue Service and Nigeria Prisons Service, embarked on illegal recruitment exercises and that some of the recruits paid huge amounts to get the jobs.
He recalled that one of the 909 persons recruited by the CBN “through backdoor” was a nephew of Mr. Buhari.

He added that FIRS Chairman, Babatunde Fowler, “lied barefaced and was deceiving Nigerians” that the body was going to recruit 1,250 people during a session with the Senate Finance Committee at a time he had already concluded “the recruitment of children of his cronies including that of John Enoh, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance.”
To cover its illegal recruitment exercise, Mr. Olatunde alleged that NPS backdated letters of appointment to 530 people.
“No transparency as these exercises were done under the table,” Mr. Olatunde said.

“It is shocking the government has been loud in its silence. Nobody has investigated or reversed it….President Buhari came to power on thr crest of anti-corruption campaign.”

In her address, Mrs. Yesufu said Mr. Buhari should be reminded that looting constitutes corruption, as well as “nepotism and illegal recruitment of children of who is who”.
The protesters demanded investigation of the exercises and their reversal, while heads of the concerned public bureaucracies be sanctioned.
“If citizens come out to protest peacefully, they should be listened to. It is not only those who carry arms that should be listened to,” Mrs. Yesufu said.

Special Assistant to Mr. Buhari on Policy, Development and Analysis, Ibrahim Bapitel, represented the SGF, Babachir Lawal.
Mr. Bapitel, after listening to the protesters and receving their letter, he said, “I believe in the content of this letter”.
“I assure action could be taken.”
He could not give a definite date for the protesters to get response, saying only the SGF could do so.
But PREMIUM TIMES gathered the protesters resolved to resume demonstration a week from now in case there is no response from government.

Buhari knocks Dangote off world’s top 100 rich list

From the 46st richest man in the world, Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote group, has dropped off the list of the 100 richest people in the world. He is now number 101.

The drastic fall of Africa’s richest man is a direct consequence of the poor management of the Naira by the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The fall in the naira, as against the dollar, from about 198 to about 400 is responsible for eroding about a quarter of Dangote’s wealth, as he commits to investing heavily in Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria.

At the launch of the new foreign exchange regime on June 23, 2016, Dangote fell from 46 on the world billionaire list to 71, and has continued in that manner with the naira plunge.

According to Bloomberg billionaires, Dangote, who was worth $15.4 billion (N3.05 trillion) in March, is now worth $11.1 billion (N3.3 trillion) —richer in naira, but poorer in dollars.

Dangote, who owns the second largest sugar-refinery in the world, remains richer than Donald Trump, American billionaire presidential candidate, and Oprah Winfrey, US TV personality, who dubs as the second richest black woman in the world.

Dangote is now worth $11.1 billion, while Trump and Oprah are estimated at $4.5 billion and $3.1 billion, respectively.

The launch of Dangote refinery, the biggest greenfield refinery in the world, billed for 2018/2019 is expected to propel him into top 20 by 2019.

Dangote Cement, one of Dangote’s major investments in Nigeria, is the biggest company on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, by market capitalisation, and the biggest cement producer in sub-saharan Africa.

Anambra Records $5m Vegetable Exports To Europe- The Vanguard

AWKA—

In a bid to underscore the importance of diversifying the economy and attracting more industries to Anambra state, Chief Willy Obiano has confirmed that the concise Economic Blueprint, made up of The Four Pillars of Development; including Agriculture, Industrialization, Trade and Commerce and Oil and Gas he developed on assumption of office has started yielding dividends.

The governor who spoke in Abuja in an interactive session he had with the People of Anambra living in the North central part of the country at the Transcorp Hilton stated that the state is now a socially stable, business-friendly environment attracting both indigenes and foreigners to seek wealth-creating opportunities.

To this end, he told the audience which included the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, Dr Oby Ezekwesili both PDP and APC members of the National Assembly, former Governor Chinweoke Mbadinuju and several others that Anambra State Investment Agency, ANSIPPA, charged with the mandate of attracting and fast-tracking investments in the state has so far attracted over $4.2 billion deals to the state.

The latest investment he confirmed was sealed on Tuesday last week with Zolt Energy Limited to build a 40 megawatts Embedded Power Generating Plant in Ogbaru. When completed in the next 18 months as scheduled, all the power generated from it will be distributed mainly in Anambra State.

On the state of agriculture, Obiano who was giving a score card of his two and half years stay in office disclosed that “in January this year, Anambra made headlines when it became the first state in Nigeria to export vegetables (Ugu and Onugbu) valued at $5million to Europe.

At the same time, our locally produced brand of rice known as Anambra Rice recently emerged the Best Rice in Africa at an African Products Forum in Lagos. Anambra Rice was adjudged better and more wholesome than other competing brands from South Africa, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Namibia and Cameroon.

Our agricultural sector has also attracted investments from 7 companies valued at $1.011bn while the large industrial farms have pushed our local rice production from 90,000 metric tons to 210,000 metric tons. At this rate, we shall soon surpass the 320,000 metric tons we consume in Anambra State per annum” Obiano told the capacity crowd at the Congress Hall that the Oil and Gas Advisory Committee headed by Dr.Emmanuel Egboga, the former Special Adviser to the President on Petroleum Matters has been charged with drafting a comprehensive Blueprint for the Oil & Gas sector and advising the State on the necessary steps that would ensure the recognition of Anambra as the 10th Oil Producing State in Nigeria.

We Attacked Church Because Members Were Disturbing Us With Music During Juma’at.. Suspect.

We Attacked Church Because Members Were Disturbing Us With Music During Juma’at

AN 18-year old suspect, Abba Usman, who allegedly participated in the recent attack by some Muslim youths on St. Philips Catholic Church, Suleja, Niger State, has ruled out religious extremism for his gang’s action.

Rather, the suspect, who said he hailed from Manumfachi in Katsina State, stated that some female members of the church should be blamed for playing musical instruments so loud, dancing and making noise while a Juma’at prayer was going on at the mosque opposite the church on Friday, July 15.

He stated this last Thursday when he was paraded by Niger State Police Command in Minna.

The suspect with no fixed address, who also claimed to be a scavenger of scraps on refuse dumps at Suleja and its environs, added that shortly after the Juma’at prayers on the fateful day, he and other youths went to the church premises to attack the church over what he described as the effrontery of the congregation to disturb the peace of the mosque while prayers were going on.

“We went to the church to teach them a bitter lesson so that they will never disturb the peace of the mosque again, especially on a Friday when we are having a prayer. They have the whole of Sunday to themselves and we have never disturbed them from doing their own programmes,” he said.

The suspect told Crime Reports that female members of the church fled in different directions on sighting the youths while the security guard who refused to leave his duty post was severely beaten.

“We all entered the church and vandalised some of their property, while we took some of their musical instruments and other valuables. I went for two of the microphones with the aim of selling them, but I was not lucky as I was caught with them,” the suspect stated.

While addressing journalists, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, described the action of the the youth that attacked the church as criminal, disclosing that police received a distress call that Friday at about 2:00p.m that some youths were vandalising the property of the church.

“On the receipt of that complaint, we sent our Rapid Response Team to the scene but before the police team got there, many of the youth had fled. However, Abah Usman was caught in action,” he said.

He pointed out that it was clear that the intent of the hoodlums was not religious but to steal, as the suspect was arrested with two microphones stolen from the church, while others went away with other items.

He added that the state Police Commissioner, Abubakar Marafa, had ordered that the police operatives should clear the hoodlums’ hideouts and prosecute any suspect arrested in connection with the case.

Why Kebbi Denies Dangote Land –bagudu

Business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s plan to establish a sugar plantation and a factory in Kebbi State may have hit the rock, as indigenous land owners, who are mostly farmers, have refused to release their farm land.

Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu said this at an interactive session with intellectuals of Kebbi State origin working at Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. The session was held at the university’s auditorium. Also in attendance were members of the Kebbi State Students’ Union, UDUS chapter.

Governor Bagudu said that even at the offer of compensation, the farmers tenaciously held on to their land, saying that Dangote’s investment will not serve their interest.

He said, “Dangote Industries’ application for 54,000 hectares of land to establish a sugar factory pre-dated my administration, but they could only identify about 24,000 hectares suitable for sugar cane cultivation.

“When we came on board, there was pressure on us because all of those 24,000 hectares belong to farmers. And the proposal we met on ground was that those farmers would be paid compensation of about a hundred thousand naira per hectare.”

He said further, “As a government, the whole cabinet looked at the proposal. Our concern is, you are going to pay a farmer hectare of land where he produces his crops. You will be making an income of 700,000 a year where he has been making 100,000 and make him a labourer forever. How as a social policy can you justify this opportunity cost?

“What is the net contribution in output that this investment is going to bring, for instance, if you are replacing your current production of rice by the production of sugar cane?

“Let there be no mistakes about it, we welcome investors and we thank Dangote Industries for identifying Kebbi as one of those states he wants to invest in. But above all, the most important thing is the need to ensure that investments serve and benefit our people.

“We hope to convince Dangote that there are other ways this can be done to have better security for his investment, like agreeing that our farmers become his out-growers and he buys from them for production in his factory.”

On adding value to rice and wheat production, which the state is noted for, Governor Bagudu explained that his administration built two models whereby a farmer, given sufficient inputs without subsidy, would inevitably achieve better outcome than a farmer receiving subsidy but insufficient inputs.

“When we tested this by interacting with farmers, we were surprised by their acceptance of adequate inputs without subsidy versus subsidy without adequate inputs,” he said.

He identified lack of human resources, inadequate infrastructure and apathy to developmental values on the part of youths as problems of education in the state.

Bagudu also used the occasion to outline remarkable achievements his administration had recorded since assumption of office.

The event with over 40 Kebbi State indigenously ranked professors and others in attendance was chaired by Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, Vice-Chancellor, Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, also an indigene of Kebbi State

The "Demolition Man" after FCT, El-Rufai set For another Round oF Demolition in Kaduna

Tension as El-Rufai issues demolition notices to 3,500 houses, 40 churches, 16 schools

A large crowd of residents of Gbagyi Villa – a suburb of Kaduna metropolis – on March 17, trooped out, carrying placards in protest against demolition notices issued to them by Kaduna State Urban Planning Development Authority, KASUPDA. The residents said they had been living in the community for decades and had acquired the necessary titles to the lands and, as such, were jolted by the intention of Kaduna State government to eject them.

Mr. Chris Obodum, Chairman, Gbagyi Community, later told journalists that the community boasted of about 3,500 buildings, 40 churches, 16 schools and 35,000 residents. He narrated: ‘The story of Gbagyi Villa is easy to understand. For hundreds of years, the area has been inhabited by the Gbagyi people. However, sometime in 2010, a suit was instituted against some members of the local community by Kaduna Polytechnic. In the course of the court proceedings, the polytechnic sought for settlement out of court. The court obliged and the matter was settled amicably.

“Thereafter the Kaduna State government issued a White Paper to that effect and the Surveyor General prepared a survey map demarcating the polytechnic land from that of the community. “The polytechnic accepted the resolution of the dispute and, thereafter, proceeded to erect a concrete wall fence demarcating its land from that of the community. “From the foregoing, it is clear to us that the polytechnic is not laying claim to Gbagyi Villa and has no pending case against us. For the Kaduna State government to claim that our community, after all these years of existence, sits on the polytechnic land is incomprehensible to us.

“Furthermore, the allegation by KASUPDA of non-possession of planning permits is false. KASUPDA knows this. It is just a veil to deceive the public and to obscure the true motive of government,” shortly after the community headed to Kaduna State High Court, presided over by Hon. Justice Hannatu Balogun, who granted an injunction stopping “the state government, the Attorney General of the state, Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority KASUPDA), respectively as respondents, either by themselves or through their employees, staff, servants, agents, proxies or whosoever, from demolishing or destroying the applicants’ buildings,” until the case was disposed.

The court order caused wild jubilation in the community, returning hope. Last Thursday, five months later, as Governor Nasir El-Rufai visited the place to see for himself, anxious residents lined the streets, not knowing what to make of the visit. But many of the residents, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard before the arrival of “Russau” (‘demolisher’ in Hausa tongue – which seems to elate El-Rufai), said they were sure that when the governor saw the quality and number of buildings in the community, he would be moved by compassion to forget any planned demolition in the estate.

“He must have been told that this place has mud houses, that it is a trench town abode of law breakers. I am sure he will see how decent we are. I am happy that he is coming,” one resident said gleefully. However, after the departure of El-Rufai, the wailing of the residents of Gbagyi Villa could be heard above the screaming sirens of his police outriders that cleared the path for him. The dark cloud that hung over Kaduna sky that evening could as well represent the forlorn feeling of the residents. El-Rufai later told journalists that the residents of Gbagyi Villa were illegal squatters and that anyone who did not have C-of-O and Building Permit would have his house pulled down. Since none of the residents has C-of-O, it invariably means that the ‘Villa’ will be demolished.

The governor, shown round the controversial estate by the Rector of Kaduna Polytechnic, Dr. Mohammed Bello Ibrahim, said it was unfortunate that thousands would have to lose life-savings because they broke the law. Bello had told him that Gbagyi Villa was an illegal settlement which had taken over 70% of the allocated land of the polytechnic even after compensation had been paid the original owners of the land about 40 years ago. Fielding questions from journalists, El-Rufai said: “This is a tragedy, because on the one hand, Kaduna Polytechnic got the allocation of this land, nearly 40 years ago for the purpose of establishing Mining Engineering School and subsequently a College of Environmental Studies. And not only the polytechnic would have benefited, but Kaduna state and the country.

“Unfortunately, as things stands today, according to the Rector, nearly 70 percent of the land has been encroached upon by illegal squatters. These buildings would have to go. We do not condone illegality in this state “And in Kaduna State, you cannot hide behind religion or tribe to break the law and get away with it. We will go through due process; we will give everybody due process to find out if he or she has title to the land and permission to build. If you don’t have the two, the law will apply and we will take your building down.

“It is unfortunate that some people have been deceived into thinking that this land is available for sale. It is unfortunate, and in our system, we are going to investigate all those involved in this deception and they will be dealt with. “Having said that, the law will prevail, and ignorance of the law is not an excuse. It is very unfortunate that many thousands will lose millions of life-savings for building illegally.

“My call to all people of Kaduna State is that before you start any building, get a Certificate of Occupancy and ensure you have the approval of KASUPDA to build. If you don’t have these two, your building is at risk. “The point here is that the law has been broken, and as the executive arm of government, our duty is to enforce. I don’t know any other thing, than upholding my mandate and enforcing the law.

“Going to court has very little to do with breaking the law. When you break the law, you can’t go to court and withhold action. This is a criminal conduct. The case in court is a civil matter. “You cannot steal from the state and go to court and say, ‘stop, don’t prosecute me for stealing’. They are two separate matters. We shall look into it. The rule of law must apply and we must all obey the law to be safe. This is what everyone should understand. “This is Kaduna State land allocated to the Federal Government. It is our job to ensure that Kaduna Polytechnic has its full title”.

Balarabe Musa Takes on President Buhari

A former Kaduna State governor and national chairman of Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Balarabe Musa, has described the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government as an “anti-people”.
He made the assertion at a colloquium held by the National Conscience Party(NCP) held in honour of the party’s founder, Gani Fawehinmi, in Akure on Thursday.
Mr. Musa, who chaired the occasion themed, The State of the Nation: If Gani Were to Be Alive, argued that “the policies of the federal government, instead of ameliorating the sufferings of the people, have further impoverished and inflicted more pains on the masses”.
He extolled the virtues of the late legal icon, whom he said, fought hard in his life time to defend the rights and wellbeing of the masses.
He recalled the efforts of the late NCP founder and the sacrifices he made to sustain democracy, which resulted in his incessant incarceration and humiliation by the military.
Delivering a lecture as the lead speaker at the event, Femi Aborisade, a lawyer, blamed the woes of the country on the greed of politicians and those at the helms of affairs.
Speaking on the topic, “Abolition of Poverty Is a Struggle the Masses Wage and an Agenda NCP Must Actualize,” Mr. Aborisade also identified personal aggrandizement as the problem of the leaders.
According to him, greed of the politicians is one of the greatest challenge responsible for the numerous economic crises bedevilling the country at the moment.

Mr. Aborisade, who stated that the present economic situation had devalued the lives of the common man, described the situation as very pathetic, saying the hopelessness in the land was as a result of self inflicted greed of the politicians.
“The situation in Nigeria today is sad, politicians have devalued our lives and gave us poverty, there is hopelessness and economic crisis in our land but when we remove the greed of the politicians, the pains will be removed,” he said.
Mr. Aborisade also pointed at the nation’s adherence to the dictates of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund as reasons for the economic challenges facing the country.
While noting that the nation is not broke financially, he urged Nigerian political leaders to allow the masses to develop an alternative economic blueprint.
“There is crisis in the land and Nigeria is not broke. If government can recover all these stolen loot and whatever recovered should be used for the benefit of the masses and should not recover the loots to re-loot,” he said.
Mr. Aborisade recommended a law that would spell out how all recovered stolen funds would be spent.
“We are not interested in only recovering the stolen loots but it must have effect on the lives of masses in terms of economy, education, power and others,” he said.
“The fight against corruption must commence from the NNPC and CBN. The Federal government should investigate and probe these organisation.
“The probe of the past administration should not be limited to former President Jonathan alone, but should be extended to past administrations.
“The Halliburton case should be revisited and Obasanjo and Atiku should be made to answer questions and they must be brought to book if found guilty.”
Mr. Aborisade also knocked President Buhari for appointing his relatives into sensitive positions.
Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who spoke at the event, said the solution to the economic crisis in the country was to restructure the country.
He argued that the restructuring would also take into account the need to have a decentralized police force.
“How can a unified police structure guarantee security in this nation? We must decentralize the police force so that the local and state can have their police,” he said.

Mr. Mimiko also used the opportunity to eulogise Fawehinmi saying if the late activist had survived his cancer of the lungs, he might have fought to ensure that government voted more funds into the health sector, particularly towards fighting cancer.

My father brutalized, lower limbs amputated, Tompolo tells Buhari

HUNTED ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, said Friday, that his family and associates were under siege by security agents, who allegedly treated roughly his 84-year-old father, in Kurutie community, Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government, resulting in the amputation of his lower limbs, two weeks ago. Tompolo and Buhari Tompolo, in an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, which he indicated might be his last, said the continuous harassment and intimidation was getting out of hand, and he does not deserve it. He said after the military invaded Kurutie and brutalized his father, sympathizers managed to rescue him to Warri, where the hospital admitted him. “Sadly, one of his lower limbs was amputated two weeks ago. From the doctor’s report, it will be a thing of miracle if he survives this incident. Is this 84- year- old man also a member of the Niger Delta Avengers that they brutalized to the point of death? He asked. He said that the harassment and intimidation was by the Nigeria Army, Navy and Department of State Services, DSS, in connivance with two chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State, Chief Ayiri Emami and Chief Michael Johnny. The ex-militant leader asked President Buhari: “Will Your Excellency accept this in good faith if this was done to your father or someone of this age in your family?” More details soon

Nigeria in recession, says Adeosun, Udoma disagrees

Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, who briefed the Senate on the state of the economy was blunt. She told the lawmakers yesterday that the country’s economy has entered a recession stage. But her Budget and National Planning counterpart, Udoma Udo Udoma, tried to keep hope alive, saying a recession is still far away.
She, however, asserted that the recession would be a very short one because government was taking a lot of measures to reverse the negative economic trend. Adeosun also disclosed that a total ‎of N247.9 billion has been released to fund key infrastructural projects.

She said: “‎Is Nigeria in recession? Technically, if you go into two quarters of negative growth, we are in recession. But I don’t think we should dwell on definitions. I think we should really dwell on where we are going. I think if we are in recession, what I will like to say is we are going to come out of it and it would be a very short one because the policies that we have would ensure that we don’t go below where we need to go. I think with what we are doing, we would begin to turn the corner, I believe, by the third quarter.

“‎We are not the only country in recession, many countries are doing far worse than us. But what Nigerians want to know is: ‘How’s that going to affect me’: and I want to assure everybody that what we are doing is going to work and it’s going to turn this economy around.” she added.‎
The minister further insisted that despite the economic ailments, Nigeria’s economy remained the biggest in Africa.Of the N247. 9 billion, Adeosun said N107 billion was for projects in the Works and Housing sector, while the Agriculture sector got N29.1 billion. She said another N60 billion would be released in the next few weeks.

Giving more details of the releases so far, Adeosun said: “Ministry of Works had received N74 billion in the last two months compared to N19bn received for the whole of last year. Agriculture which is a strategic focus of this government has received N21.9billion compared to just N4 billion for the whole of last year and Ministry of Transport has received N22 billion compared to just N6billion last year.

I believe the speed and extent of our releases show government’s intent and seriousness around reviving this economy. We are very confident that the work that we are doing will bear fruits. We are already beginning to see increased production in our agriculture.

In another development, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Chief Economist of the World Bank, Prof. Joseph Stiglitz, yesterday said most economic policies handed over to Nigeria and other African countries by global financial institutions caused part of the development woes in the country and continent.

And as if in agreement, Adeosun said: “‎I ‎am not too worried about the International Monetary Fund(IMF) projection because one of their functions is global economic surveillance. They equally issued a negative report on Britain as a result of Brexit . I don’t think we should panic every time IMF speaks. I think we need to be confident about what we are doing and where we are going. I remain extremely confident about Nigeria.”

On what was inherited from the past administration in terms of finances, Adeosun said: “‎I inherited very little by way of reserves. I inherited significant debt, contractor debt, cash calls of $5 billion dollars outstanding to oil companies. We have paid contractors N107 billion but they still find it very difficult to work because they are owed and some of them have not been paid since 2012.
Their claims are over N390 billion. So, I inherited reserves more negative than positive because the economy is actually in very good hands and we are doing absolutely our best to get through this difficult period.” The minister also explained that the loans government has taken so far to fund the budget have been more of local loans.“We have been borrowing largely from the domestic market because we need to get the exchange rate sorted out to enable us borrow from the international market.”

While briefing State House correspondent at the end of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting presided over by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, Udoma admitted that all signals to the fact that the country might not be able to measure up to the criteria that would comfortably push its economy.

He dispelled suggestions that the government might not, as a fall out of the current dwindling finances , be able to meet its obligations to its workers, noting that the government would continue to pay workers salaries .

However, Udoma, said the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) would be giving the government all the figures adding: “If as we suspect the second quarter is also negative, then of course technically you could say that we are in recession. But even if we are not, the situation in the economy right now is one that of course we are addressing.”

Speaking at the yearly general meeting of Africa Export-Import Bank in Mahe Island, Seychelles, Obasanjo who said he remains a realist, noted that the World Bank gave Nigeria the import substitution policy and the structural adjustment policy, but when it failed, they blamed the implementation instead of accepting the misdirection.

The former president, who lamented the reversal of gains and achievements of his administration, few years after he left office, said that his economic policies revved up cocoa production from 150,000 tonnes to 400,000; cassava, from 30 million metric tonnes to 50 million metric tonnes and privatization of shipping and railways that were ridden with corruption and maladministration as well as promoting cement export through Dangote Group, among others.

On his part, Stiglitz said the policies and advice handed down to Africa by the International Monetary Fund led to its industrialization challenges.
He said that he had kicked against the policy, not because it was entirely wrong, but that it lacked distinction of economic opportunities between developed and less developed countries, with assumption that everyone would come out better.
According to him, it is gratifying now that the policy promoters are realizing his earlier warning and seeking counter policies to amend the consequences.
One of such policies from the IMF, he said, was the discouragement of the establishment of development financing institutions by countries and regions, but noted that it is now championing such initiatives, with two being launched in Asia last year.

He said to counter the entrenched challenges of those policies, emerging economies, characterized mainly by commodities’ trading, must invest in education and industrialization with value addition to their products’ offering as target

Emefiele To Senate: Nigeria’s Economy In Deep Crisis

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN ), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, yesterday told the Senate that the nation's economy had entered into a deep crisis, as it remained recessive in the first and second quarters of the 2016 fiscal year.

Emefiele, who met with the apex legislative chamber in a closed- door session for two hours, also said that Nigerians would have to pay more sacrifices because inflation would further skyrocket.

This was as the apex chamber appreciated the enormous economic challenges facing the nation , commending and supporting the CBN for its policies so far to strengthen the ailing economy. A senator, who attended the session, disclosed to
New Telegraph that Emefiele had to own up to the true position of the economy because it appeared that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC ) had lost hope of proffering solution to the worrisome situation.

The senator, who spoke under the condition of anonymity , noted that based on the briefing of the CBN boss, the Federal Government might not be able to sustain up to 75 per cent of salary payment in the 2016 budget implementation. The lawmaker also expressed pessimism on the ability of the economic team of President Muhammadu Buhari to come up with strategies that would use the agricultural sector to diversify the economy.

The senator, who is a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said that the only way to rescue the economy from further recession was for government to reflate the system, stressing that it was the measure applied by other economies that faced the challenge of recession.

“The CBN governor admitted that the economy is in trouble. And from the look of things, it is not going to get better. Salaries may not get 75 per cent implementation when you see the level of budget implementation so far. The CBN governor admitted that the economy was in recession in the first quarter and in the second quarter. In fact, they may not get 60 per cent implementation. “Reflating the economy is what other economies in recession have done, but that is not happening here.

The economic team is not able to come up with strategies on how they can even use agriculture to diversify the economy. ” The source further said that Emefiele did not want to disclose certain critical issues raised by the senators because they were serious policy issues that had to do with the competence and capability of the ruling party.

However, in a press statement issued by the leadership of the Senate at the end of the executive session, the Upper Chamber said that the governor of the CBN presented a comprehensive and lucid account of the performance of the Nigerian economy in the last one year.

The statement claimed that Emefiele ’ s presentation began with current global economic conditions, which had been characterised by external shocks, including the sharp decline in commodity prices, the geopolitical tensions along important global trading routes and tightening of Monetary Policy in the United States of America.

It further said that the appearance of Emefiele was in line with Section 8 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007, which requires that the governor of the bank provide, to the National Assembly, periodic updates on the activities of the bank as well as the performance of the economy.

The Senate ’s statement reads: “He drew linkages of these occurrences with the Nigerian economy, especially with respect to the over 70 per cent decline in oil prices from about $116 per barrel in June 2014 to about $30 per barrel earlier in the year.

“The governor’s presentation also gave us an insight into the bank ’ s decisions in the Foreign Exchange Market and the rationale underlying the recent re- introduction of a flexible exchange rate mechanism in Nigeria.

“He also delved into the health of the financial system and discussed the bank ’ s detailed examinations of financial institutions, as well as its zero tolerance for insider dealings by board and management of deposit money banks.

In sum, the governor declared that the strategic health of Nigeria ’s financial system is still strong at this time. “After the presentation , many senators asked a host of pertinent questions and raised issues concerning the banking system, the slippage in economic growth for the first quarter of 2016, the gradual rise in inflation , fall in foreign exchange reserves and policy coordination between the fiscal and monetary authorities.

“Following an exhaustive response by both the governor and his team , the Senate acknowledged that these are indeed difficult times all over the world and not just in Nigeria. “The Senate also acknowledged the pains that many people may be facing at this time , especially in light of increases in price of electricity and fuels.

But having carefully considered the policies of the CBN, the Senate would like to commend and support these policies because they are mostly geared towards increasing local production, creating jobs here in Nigeria, safeguarding our commonwealth and expanding economic opportunities and growth in Nigeria.

“It is critical that we all put hands together to seek long term solutions to our underlying problem of non -diversification of foreign exchange earnings and revenues, rather than pointing fingers or apportioning blames.
